Raven Campbell, creator of @mynaturalhairisdope
Since embarking on my natural hair journey about a year ago, I have come across many great Instagram accounts. @MyNaturalHairIsDope is one of those accounts. The account owner is Raven Campbell. I approached Raven about doing a short interview for my blog because I wanted to know more about her. She is regularly featuring other women on her IG account and I wanted to get a better idea of who she is and what her motivation is. I feel that Raven, herself, needs some recognition. She has impacted the lives of so many women by just simply sharing their curly-haired photos on her platform. What we do not realize is that some of these women have their own serious issues that they deal with outside of social media. Some deal with self-esteem issues, depression, abusive home environments, etc… To me, Raven has created an amazing outlet for women of all walks of life to express themselves, especially natural-haired women who have had to deal with hair-acceptance since day one. Here is Raven’s brief, yet insightful interview:
1. When did you create @mynaturalhairisdope?
I created @mynaturalhairisdope two years ago, April of 2014.
2. Why did you create the account ?
I created it after I was featured on different natural hair accounts 5 years ago. Ever since then, I wanted my own natural hair page that featured women from all over the world with different hair textures .
3. Tell me a little about your natural hair journey. Have you always been natural or did you go through a transition phase?
Well, I was natural when I was younger but my family put a perm in it. I big chopped in January 5, 2010. I went natural after I got my hair done at Paul Mitchell's hair school and I saw a girl with a Mohawk. Her hair was very natural and beautiful. I had my friend cut my hair and I rocked my big chop ever since then .
4. Who are some of your natural hair role models ?
5. Who are some of your greatest inspirations (overall)?
6. What is one of the most difficult things you have had to deal with in terms of wearing your natural hair?
One of the most difficult things is dealing with shrinkage and detangling my hair.
7. What is your favorite quote?
My favorite quote is "Creativity is the art of courage".
8. What is your favorite food?
My favorite food is corn bread, candied yams, collard greens (Soul Food).
9. Tell me a little about your background.
I am from Baton Rouge, LA which is 45 minutes away from New Orleans . I was born on April 2, 1990 . A lot of people ask me what am I and I just laugh and say “I'm Black”. My ancestors are Creole and some people think I'm Asian and Black .
10. What are your thoughts about the natural hair movement?
I'm really excited about the natural hair movement . I watched it grow and now there are more women going back to their natural hair. When I went natural 6 years ago, there wasn't a lot of women rocking their natural hair and stores didn't have as many natural hair products on their shelves like they do now.
11. Where do you see yourself in 3 years?
I see myself selling my own products or becoming a brand ambassador for a natural hair company.
12. If you could tell all your followers anything right now, what would you tell them?
To be patient when growing your natural hair. Keep it moisturized and take care of it so it can grow long and beautiful . Also, find out what products your hair loves and stick with those products!
13. What do you love & hate about social media?
I love that social media allow us to network with other Naturalistas around the world. I hate that social media can stir up a lot of mess and allow a lot of negativity to stir up on social media.
The natural hair movement did not begin recently. It has always existed. The difference between then and now is technology. We now have the opportunity to see one another and to connect with so many other people who are also on their natural hair journey. It is inspiring and life-changing in so many ways. I applaud Raven not only taking the time to manage her great Instagram account but also for featuring all types of women from all over the world with different hair types.
